DEXA & Body Composition.
The most accurate way to measure bone density, osteoporosis risk and body composition.
What is a DEXA scan?
A DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scan uses a very low dose of radiation to measure bone strength. The same technology can also measure muscle mass, fat distribution and visceral fat with high accuracy.
What it's used for
- Diagnosing osteoporosis or osteopenia
- Monitoring bone density over time
- Assessing fracture risk, particularly in older adults or post-menopausal women
- Monitoring the effect of osteoporosis treatment
- Body composition analysis for health, fitness or clinical monitoring
How to prepare
No special preparation is required. Avoid calcium supplements for 24 hours before your scan if instructed by your doctor. Wear comfortable clothing without metal zips or buttons. You may be asked to wear a gown.
What to expect
You'll lie on a padded table while a scanning arm passes over your body — usually your lower spine and hip for bone density, or your whole body for a composition scan. Painless, very low radiation dose, about 5-10 minutes.
